Paul: Apostle of Christ Movie Review

On Friday, I went to see the recent film Paul: Apostle of Christ. I thought a Christian teen’s perspective on the movie would be interesting in case you’re deciding whether or not to see it for yourself.

Paul: The Apostle of Christ sets the story in motion with Luke wanting to write down the words of Paul. But that is not all.

This film tells of how Christians stood strong in the face of horrific persecution because “men do no die for things they doubt”, how a hardened heathen becomes open to the complete love of God, and how that is only possible if we deal with our enemies as Jesus instructed.

Paul: The Apostle of Christ tells this all in a stunning display of cinematography quality, gut-wrenching intrigue, and thrilling conflict sure to challenge and inspire Christians today. Because as Luke says in the film:

It cast Jim Caviezel as Luke, who played as Jesus in Passion of the Christ and also Jesus in a few other Biblical movies if I remember correctly? They did a lot of work to make him look young. XD

It’s Priscilla and Aquila! Such a sweet couple. Priscilla looks quite a bit younger though. XD

The entire time, I was trying to figure out where I had seen the actor for Aquila before. I still haven’t figured it out. XD

In the movie, Priscilla and Aquila are in charge of a hidden community of Christians in Rome. The film is set in AD 67, after the great fire, which Emperor Nero blamed on the Christians and thus their horrible persecution.

The movie is rated PG-13, and the only images I found disturbing was when Luke cleaned Paul’s gashes after being whipped. It actually wasn’t graphic, I just kept wincing myself and was like MAKE IT STOP OUCH OUCH OUCH. XD The Christians being set on fire wasn’t graphic either, but it was sad so I averted my eyes. ?

Also made me wonder why I still get nervous before telling people about Jesus when I have total religious freedom and all these brave brothers and sisters are still risking their lives around the world today.

MY FAVORITE CHARACTER WAS THIS DUDE. Right from the trailer I knew he would be. The bad guys are always my favorite in any given movie (unless they’re like… extremely ugly…).

BUT ESPECIALLY THIS GUY. If I said why, I’d spoil everything for you, but if you watch this film, you’ll see why this is my favorite type of bad dude.

Totally forget his name, but he’s played by Olivier Martinez and he’s the Roman general-type man in charge of the prison where Paul is at.

If you don’t watch the movie for anything else, watch it for this guy and his awesome character arc.

Paul said this to him and… ? NO SPOILERS.

We of course can’t forget Paul and Luke! I LOVED how at one point they joked and were positive even in the prison. “Peter’s snoring” ?

After a while of moping (always takes me a few moments to stop moping XD), that would totally be me. I thrive off of positivity in the darkest of moments. But if you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you probably already knew that. 😉 #lifeundefeated

Of course it was still a dark moment. And they got Paul’s thorn in the flesh all wrong (if you study the Bible for “thorn in the flesh / side”, you’ll find it’s actually persecution that Paul was struggling against and that God gave Him the grace to overcome, not trying to overcome his past as they portrayed it in the movie). But it doesn’t detract from the film.

(sorry for the tiny image size; I couldn’t find a bigger one XD)

Overall, if you’re interested in supporting phenomenal Christian movies and want to have your faith rocked, inspired, and challenged with a fantastic film full of thematic peril, Paul: The Apostle of Christ is the movie for you.

This review is 100% my own opinion and written out of my own desire because I want to support excellent clean movies, especially ones as awesome as this and made by Christians.

HAVE YOU SEEN PAUL: THE APOSTLE OF CHRIST? WHAT DID YOU THINK? IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT, DO YOU PLAN TO SEE IT? WHY OR WHY NOT?

Wow. Powerful movie. I don’t think I’ll be able to see it, as my family doesn’t usually watch PG-13 movies and Passion of the Christ scares me ?

Great review, Madi! It looks like a pretty good movie (I had heard about it before, but I enjoyed your perspective). I probably won’t be seeing it, because I don’t go to the movies, and we probably won’t get the DVD. I’m not really much of a movie person, anyway, but I think it’s great that this movie is an option for people that do like movies!

    • Madi April 2, 2018 at 12:05 pm - Reply

Same — we hardly ever go to the movies, but we always go if there’s a great Christian film being released. Thanks so much!
